Matchsticks, Laserd MDF Grid

The "full pack" grid in the series, this panel houses 15,252 matchsticks. When looked at closely, visual inconsistencies in the pattern of the grid become more apparent. This is a beautiful example of the individuality of each match. For even though it is a manufactured object, every match has it's own character that you have to react to when arranging them together in mass.

In this panel, we are first able to see the MDF grid structure that supports and houses the matchsticks. It is also when the glitch in the grid starts to creep in.

Degradation of the grid ravages this final panel. It is where not only the corruption of the system, but also the failure of the machine is the most apparent.

Part of the reason I chose to sink the matches through the grid and suspend them, was due to the beautiful contrast between the fronts and backs of these panels. Both sides are captivating in their intensity, yet offer completely different tones to the work— bring them into the-round of sculpture rather than some static wall piece.
